Gold, Gold Plating or Gold-Filled? Here's a breakdown of the terms.

Do not understand what is the difference between gold, gold plating and goldfield and what is the reason for the price difference between them? Don't worry, I'm here to sort out the confusion for you. gold:

  • The undisputed star : Gold is like the king of jewelry - sparkling, luxurious and of the highest quality. Gold is a precious metal that is naturally formed and mined from the earth, and its value comes from its beauty, and also due to the fact that it is rare and very durable. Karat: The purity of gold is measured in karat - the higher the karat, the purer and more expensive the gold. 24 karat is pure gold. Most gold jewelry is made of 9, 14 or 18 karat gold, which is mixed with other metals to create a less expensive and stronger alloy.
  • Price : Real gold jewelry is expensive, but durable and can be used by you for a lifetime (and can also be an equal inheritance for grandchildren one day :) The value of gold is preserved over the years and even increases as time passes.

Gold coating:

  • Outer gold layer: Gold plating is an outer layer of gold over relatively cheap metals such as brass and copper. There are different thicknesses in which jewelry can be coated, from flash which is a thin coating, to a coating of several microns. The thicker the coating, the longer the coating will last. Gold plating gives a shiny and glowing look, but does not last forever. Compared to real gold, it is recommended not to shower or swim with plated jewelry.
It should be noted that not necessarily water may damage the coating - even constant contact with the skin and sweat, rubbing and friction can over time cause the coating to wear out, but it is always possible to renew the coating.
  • Erosion : Over time, the gold plating may wear off a bit and expose the base metal.
  • Price : significantly cheaper than pure gold jewelry.

Gold plating is a great option for fashion jewelry, jewelry that you don't want to spend a lot of money on, and jewelry that you can take off easily (I wear plated jewelry, and it looks like new even after years - I just make sure to remove it before showering).

Goldfield:

  • A strong core : gold filled or in English gold filled - is literally gold filled - that is, an outer shell layer of gold with another base metal inside. It differs from ordinary gold plating in that the outer layer of gold must be thick, and it is also produced with a different technology - of pressure and heat bonding, which ensures a strong connection between the metal parts.
Only a piece of jewelry in which the gold content is at least 5% deserves to be called goldfield.
  • Durability : Goldfield jewelry is relatively durable and can be enjoyed for many years.
  • Luxurious appearance : Goldfield gives a beautiful gold appearance, and it is difficult to tell the difference between goldfield and pure gold with the unprofessional eye.
  • Price : cheaper than pure gold jewelry, and more expensive than gold plating.

Disadvantages : Since goldfield is made with a special technique, it is not possible to create any jewelry from goldfield, any goldsmithing operation in metal (such as heating, sawing) may damage it, therefore it is almost impossible to create goldfield jewelry by hand and not in a factory.

So what to choose? It depends on the budget, the needs and the way the jewelry is used.

  • Pure gold: suitable for those looking for the highest quality material available - and accordingly willing to pay accordingly.
  • Gold plating: a cheaper solution for those who are interested in a gold look, but are willing to keep the jewelry and remove it if necessary.
  • Goldfield: A good choice for those who want the perfect balance between price, durability and a luxurious look.

Important tip: in any case, it is recommended to purchase jewelry from a known and reliable jewelry store.
Now that you understand the differences, go and choose the perfect piece of jewelry for you!
And the most important thing in my opinion - choose a piece of jewelry that will make you happy, flatter you and make you feel good about yourself. And choose an original and not boring piece of jewelry!
